The Electrical Reuse Project

24 September 2025

Here at W&S Waste Management, we're proud to reflect on our participation in an innovative community initiative that brought together local residents, charities, and businesses to tackle electrical waste across Dorset. The Electrical Reuse Project, spearheaded by Litter Free Dorset, demonstrated how collaborative efforts can create meaningful environmental impact whilst supporting our communities.

About the Project

Litter Free Dorset, a charity dedicated to reducing waste and promoting sustainable living throughout our county, organised repair cafes across six locations:

  • Dorchester
  • Weymouth
  • Blandford
  • Gillingham
  • Wimborne
  • Sherborne

These events provided residents with an accessible way to recycle their small electrical items rather than sending them to landfill. The project formed part of the national Recycle Your Electricals campaign, funded by Material Focus, and represented a fantastic opportunity to prevent WEEE items from contributing to Dorset's waste burden.

The purpose of the initiative was to promote closing the loop on electrical waste by increasing capture and reuse of unwanted household electricals. Through collaboration with Dorset Repair Cafes, the project offered comprehensive solutions from collection through to redistribution via community 'Give and Take' events.

Our Role Behind the Scenes

W&S Waste Management was delighted to support this worthwhile cause by handling the logistics that made these events possible.

We provided home collection services for residents unable to attend the repair cafes directly. Additionally, we managed the recycling of electrical items brought to the cafes that couldn't be repaired or redistributed, guaranteeing they were processed responsibly rather than ending up in landfill. Our involvement extended beyond simple waste collection. We worked closely with Litter Free Dorset to ensure the entire process met environmental standards whilst supporting the project's community-focused goals.

Why This Matters to Us

This partnership perfectly aligned with our social values and commitment to working alongside local charities and community organisations. Community engagement isn't just something we do – it's part of who we are. Our team takes pride in supporting initiatives that create lasting positive impact for Dorset residents.

We've previously collaborated with Litter Free Dorset on a project that involved highlighting the danger of single-use BBQs. This highlighted our commitment to championing environmental awareness while supporting people and places around us. The Electrical Reuse Project represented another opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to circular and sustainable living, where reducing waste, reusing resources, and recycling responsibly form the foundation of our operations.

Encouraging Electrical Recycling

Events like these play a crucial role in changing public attitudes towards electrical waste. Many people simply don't know what WEEE recycling involves or how to access appropriate disposal services. By bringing recycling directly to communities through repair cafes and home collections, we can overcome the practical barriers that often prevent proper electrical recycling.

The project's success demonstrated that when recycling is made convenient and accessible, residents respond positively. This approach helps educate people about the importance of responsible electrical waste disposal whilst making the process straightforward and community oriented.

Giving Electricals New Life

And one of the most rewarding aspects of this initiative was seeing how discarded electrical items could find new purposes.

Through PAT testing and repairs carried out by dedicated volunteers, many items that would have been thrown away were given second lives. Those suitable for redistribution became available at 'Give and Take' events, where community members could acquire pre-loved electrical items at nominal cost.

Items beyond repair weren't wasted either. We ensured these were processed through our nationwide WEEE collection service, extracting valuable materials for use in new products.

The Electrical Reuse Project showcased what's possible when businesses, charities, and communities work together towards common environmental goals. We look forward to supporting similar initiatives in the future that combine practical waste solutions with genuine community benefit.
