What materials need to be recycled?

Where suitable, some dry recyclables, like glass, metals, and plastics, may be collected together, while paper and card may need separating depending on your waste collector’s arrangements.

What is Simpler Recycling?

Simpler Recycling represents a significant shift in UK waste management legislation, introduced by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) to standardise recycling practices for workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities, and more.

This initiative required all businesses and non-domestic premises in England with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees to separate specific materials from general waste by 31st March 2025, regardless of staff distribution across multiple locations.

Micro-firms with fewer than 10 employees have until 31st March 2027 to comply, and by this date, all businesses will also need to collect plastic film and bags separately. The legislation applies to workplaces, schools, charities, medical centres, and more; not just traditional businesses. Garden waste is not covered by these reforms.

The goal is straightforward: reduce landfill, create consistent recycling standards nationwide, and support a circular economy by increasing the quality of collected materials, and early adoption means immediate cost and environmental benefits.
